Cross registration is an opportunity for undergraduate students to enrich their academic experience by completing coursework at other LVAIC institutions. The program provides students with access to expanded fields of study, courses offerings, and academic resources. Since its inception in 1971, the LVAIC cross registration program has offered additional opportunities for students, faculty, and staff, as well as employee spouses. Full-time undergraduate degree seeking students in good academic standing who are not first semester freshmen and are enrolled at a member institution of the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges, may register for up to two undergraduate courses per term or summer session with a limit of 8 cross registered courses during their academic career.

This system is a prime example of the LVAIC community maximizing resources wherein limited course offerings only need to run on one campus each semester. This affords students the opportunity to learn in a new environment with different classmates while also offering the benefits that the host campus supplies the community at large. This benefit spills over to employees and their spouses/domestic partners, as well. It allows the educational benefit of working in the Lehigh Valley higher education community to expand beyond their own institutions.

Over the last 5 years, LVAIC cross registration has seen a steady increase in usage. This occurs for a number of reasons, including the Documentary Storymaking Collaborative Minor, the addition of certain courses to the curriculum at some campuses to accommodate the needs of cross registered students, and the slight trend toward more aligned academic calendars. Anticipating this trend to continue, LVAIC’s Registrars and campus leadership are continually working to find new collaborative programs enabled by cross registration.
