COLLABORATIVE INSTITUTIONAL TRAINING INITIATIVE (CITI)
The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) is available for faculty, staff, or students seeking high quality, peer-reviewed, web-based educational courses in research, ethics, regulatory oversight, responsible conduct of research, research administration, and more. Those interested in accessing the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) information for member campuses, please visit the login page or register for an account here. Under “Select Your Organization Affiliation,” select “Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges.” Set up your account using your campus e-mail address.

Academics for Veterans, or A’s for Vets, is an alliance, formed by The Lehigh Valley Military Affairs Council, consisting of Institutions of Higher Learning in the Lehigh Valley, endeavoring to better support veterans seeking education and support. Current partner schools are: Cedar Crest College (School of Adult and Graduate Education) DeSales University East Stroudsburg University Kutztown University Lehigh Carbon Community College (LCCC) Lehigh Career & Technical Institute (LCTI) Lincoln Technical Institute McCann Schools of Business Moravian College Muhlenberg College New Horizons Computer Learning Centers Northampton Community College Penn State University Our mission is to bring together a group of higher learning institutions in the Greater Lehigh Valley and collaborate to train, educate, and support discharged military veterans and their qualifying dependents to be successful in achieving their professional and personal educational goals. The vision is that through these efforts all veterans attending these schools will gain meaningful employment and/or achieve their academic goals, preferably in the Greater Lehigh Valley area.

LVAIC is sponsoring a one-day workshop for the professional development of academic department chairs. This highly interactive day will focus on two critical themes challenging academic leadership today. Hiring and Evaluation Hiring and evaluation are two of the highest risk activities in which academic leaders engage. This portion of the day will focus on supervisory best practices, legal compliance and effective tools for hiring and evaluation. Conflict Management The second portion of the workshop will focus on managing and resolving departmental conflict and dysfunction. Participants will be engaged in identifying and implementing creative, practical and accessible communication and conflict management tools.

This one-day conference sponsored by The Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges (LVAIC) continues to explore issues related to the adult learner, the fastest growing population in colleges today. Topics for the range from blogging to the needs adult LGBTQ learners. Previous attendees have represented many institutions of higher education including community colleges, two-year colleges, and private and public colleges and universities. Deans, faculty, advisors, students, and staff will all find something of interest to take back and use at their home institutions.

1. Raise awareness among key consortium personnel of our institutional obligations under federal disability law, including: • “to take steps necessary to ensure that no individual with a disability is excluded, denied services, segregated or otherwise treated differently than other individuals because of the absence of auxiliary aids and services” (Americans with Disabilities Act, 1990) • to ensure that "No otherwise qualified individual with a disability in the United States . . . shall, solely by reason of her or his disability, be excluded from the participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance . . ." (Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, 1973). • to ensure that all telecommunications equipment and service providers contracted with the institution make their products and services accessible to people with disabilities, (Section 255 of the Federal Communications Act, 1998). • to furnish appropriate auxiliary aids and services to ensure effective communication with individuals with disabilities, (Section 255 of the Federal Communications Act, 1998). • to “remove architectural barriers in existing facilities, including communication barriers that are structural in nature, where such removal is readily achievable,(Section 255 of the Federal Communications Act, 1998). • Offer alternative methods to make goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages when barrier removal is not readily achievable, (ADA Title III Regulation 28 CFR Part 36, 1990). 2. Identify, coordinate, and advance ongoing institutional efforts in the area of digital accessibility including websites, digital publications, emails, announcements, and course materials. 3. Explore the establishment of a Consortium- Wide Digital Accessibility Working Group or community of practice modeled after the Five Colleges Consortium (consisting Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College, UMass Amherst)

Just as the brain controls every function of the body, a concussion affects every aspect of a college student’s life. It takes a team approach to support students recovering from a concussion. Our discussion will cover immediate recognition and care for a concussion, as well as how the campus academic community can provide proper services and support for the student. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with others to problem-solve and share ideas on how their campus community can best care for and support the concussed college student

This is a one-day workshop on the integration of digital tools into course design and pedagogy for all LVAIC faculty. The conference includes Lightning Round presentations where LVAIC faculty showcased the use of a specific tool in one of their courses and thematic "Test Kitchen" sessions where presenters provided more information on strategies for effective integration of tools to support student learning outcomes and course goals.

This event brings together LVAIC faculty, librarians, and other educators invested in the theme, Inquiry in the Information Age: Information Literacy as Critical Thinking. Information literacy is thinking critically about the consumption and production of information and participation in the information ecosystem. This symposium seeks to join these two concepts in the service of forwarding an inter-campus and interdisciplinary conversation. How can we as educators shape a pedagogy where these two work together? What might that look like? And what kind of impact can it have? What is critical thinking? “Critical thinking is a habit of mind characterized by the comprehensive exploration of issues, ideas, artifacts, and events before accepting or formulating an opinion or conclusion.” (Association of American Colleges and Universities) What is information literacy? “Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.” (Association of College and Research Libraries) How are information literacy and critical thinking related? The symposium will allow the international students to present their work and have meaningful conversations with faculty, staff and other students. The conversations will allow all participants to have wider lens through which they can see the world; the international students will present their view of world and learn how other people see the world and vice versa. This way, they can be heard and begin creating relationships with many different people. It will also allow the students to explore the campuses in the Lehigh Valley and get to know their community.

This conference focuses on Finding Your Voice. The conference is co-sponsored by LBGT/Gender and Sexuality programs of Lafayette College, Muhlenberg College, Moravian College, and Northampton Community College. Each year, the Lehigh Valley Research Consortium publishes the State of the Lehigh Valley: Community Trends at a Glance, a report that showcases consortial faculty research on the quality of life in the Lehigh Valley region. The report is released at an annual event each spring, which provides a venue for local business and community leaders to gather, listen to findings, and discuss opportunities for collaborative action.

The emerging Community of Practice of Multilingual Students Language and Culture Support is pleased to invite you to the First Annual LVAIC TESOL Conference. This full-day conference will bring together writing instructors, research librarians, and TESOL professionals from Lehigh Valley and beyond. Presenters from Lehigh Valley K-12, higher education, and adult literacy institutions will discuss translanguaging as practice in multilingual classrooms. Translanguaging refers to the process in which multilingual students integrate all their linguistic resources in communication. Embracing translanguaging validates and supports the many benefits of multicultural students’ experiences when it is seen as an advantage rather than a compensatory strategy (Vogel & Garcia, 2017).

CITE’s innovative approach combines video, live actors, and facilitated discussion to explore bias implicit in this critical piece of the faculty hiring process.

Psychology students gave 20 paper and 13 poster presentations on topics in social, developmental, educational, health, cognitive, and gender psychology. The Psychology keynote speaker was Dr. Catherine Bagwell, an established researcher in developmental psychology/psychopathology from Colgate University, who addressed the importance peer relations and friendships in childhood, adolescence, and emerging adulthood.

The Social Research Social Justice Conference provides students within the Lehigh Valley a forum for sharing innovative, excellent research addressing some of the most challenging issues of social justice in both contemporary and historical contexts. SRSJ provides important opportunities for students from campuses across the Lehigh Valley to come together in critical conversations about the social justice issues that matter to them most. The conference encourages collaborative exploration among students, faculty, and community members of the role of academic research and creative work in the creation of more just and humane societies.
