In order to commemorate 50 years of collaboration, LVAIC is hosting a year-long learning series regarding the future of higher education. The fourth event in this series took place on Thursday, August 15, 2019 at DeSales University. The focus of this event was on Exploring Campus Economics: What’s My Role?

The program began with Mark Reed, Chief Financial Officer of Moravian College, offering a presentation regarding the fundamentals of higher education finance. This presentation offered an overview of the basic model of revenue and expenses in higher education and the need to make trade-off decisions based on the outcomes of these cash flows.

This presentation was followed by a keynote address from Jacalyn Askin, Senior Fellow for Finance and Campus Management of National Association of College and University Business Officers. Askin’s presentation focused on the economic models project that her organization created to help diving, surviving, and thriving institutions. The project calls for institutions to examine their mission, structure, resources, and strengths. Through the presentation, Askin offered insights from campuses who perform well in each of these areas. The full project is available here.

After her presentation, Askin moderated a panel of representatives from across the LVAIC community. These panelists offered different perspectives from their positions on their home campuses, including how different areas of campuses influence and are influenced by budgetary restrictions. These panelists included:

  • Audra Kahr, Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer, Cedar Crest College
  • Amy Scott, Associate Professor of Business & Economics & Budget Committee Member, DeSales University
  • Annette Diorio, Vice President for Campus Life, Lafayette College
  • Douglas Mahony, Associate Professor of Management & Faculty Senate Chair, Lehigh University
  • Allan Chen, Chief Information Officer, Muhlenberg College

The next event in this series focuses on External Relationships and Accountability. This event will take place on November 8, 2019 at Cedar Crest College. More information regarding these speakers, recordings of this session, and this series is available on the series website.
